San Diego Zoo
As home to over 3,800 animals and numerous other animal attractions, the San Diego Zoo is a favorite of many. You can see the animals in habitats designed to replicate their natural surroundings in exhibits located outside as well as indoors.
Some of the habitats include but are not limited:
Tiger River - Here you can walk along a riverbed pathway that to a tiger's lair, a crocodilian pool, a fishing cat's den, and a marsh complete with cattails, fallen trees, and wafting mists. Enjoy the cooling shade from towering palms, coral and orchid trees, ferns, figs, bamboos, and gingers.
Wings of Australasia – The aviaries have some of the most diverse bird species in the world. There are over 100 birds native to Australia, 36 exhibits within five modules of aviaries designed to house multiple species of birds, including endangered Micronesian kingfishers, hornbill species, and the ever-fascinating Raggiana birds of paradise.
Reptile House – As you take a stroll around its perimeter you can safely view an incredible collection of pythons, cobras, boas, tortoises, rattlesnakes, and Gila monsters. Because you're on the outside looking in, you're not bothered by the heat and humidity required to maintain some of our reptiles.
Polar Bear Plunge - To experience the Arctic while visiting sunny California, be sure to spend some time here. You will see Siberian reindeer, Pallas' cats, northern birds, and native plants, along with polar bears. The most popular area of the exhibit is the Plunge where you can see the curious and playful the polar bears that have been known to swim right up to the glass to check out all the humans on display.
Petting Paddock -Don’t be fooled by the name, although the over 30 exhibits are geared for the pleasure of the children; everyone will find something to smile about in this area. You can pet the wooly sheep or comb a goat’s hair, feel how sharp a hedgehog’s quills are, or even hear how quietly a horned owl can flap its wings. Of special interest is the animal nursery where you can see the babies being bottle fed by the zoo’s workers. There are animals in the Petting Paddock that are not in any other part of the zoo. During the summer months there are special children’s programs such as Dr. Zoolittle, animal themed events, crafts stations, and up close animal encounters.
Additional fun can be found by going on a 40 minute tour of the zoo in the double-decker buses, riding the Skyfari Arial Tram and going to the assorted animal shows.
